Learn About the Three Ways in Which Dental Implants Can Be Used in the Smile
- Posted on: Jul 30 2019
Dental implants have become the first step in helping patients restore their smile. The team of Deeter Dental Group is pleased to offer this and tooth replacement options to patients in the areas of Bismarck and Garrison, ND. Our professionals can educate patients on the benefits of dental implants and the many ways in which they can be used to enhance the smile!
Understanding dental implants
Our staff at Deeter Dental Group work routinely with dental implants. These titanium posts are surgically implanted into the bone of the jaw. By doing so, the implant stimulates a process of natural bone growth called osseointegration. The implant is then solidified into the bone for optimum strength. Afterwards, the implant is restored in a variety of different ways based on the patient’s needs.
Ways in which dental implants are used
There are three ways in which our dental team will use dental implants:
- Single tooth replacement – most of our patients use dental implants to replace a single tooth. The implant is placed where the old tooth once was, and several weeks are allowed for osseointegration to occur. Once the tooth is solid in the jaw, our dentist will place a custom dental crown over the abutment to function as a tooth replacement.
- Anchor for dental bridges – dental bridges are restorations made of porcelain used to restore the smile after one or more teeth in a row have been lost or extracted. If patients are missing an anchor on one or both sides of the dental bridge, a dental implant may be placed as an alternative. This gives the dentist a stable foundation on both sides for successful placement of a custom dental bridge.
- Implant-retained dentures – patients with full, complete dentures may be unhappy with the fit and function with dental adhesives alone. Instead patients can ask about using dental implants for implant-retained dentures. Several implants are placed along the dental arch and are used as a foundation for stabilizing a full denture in the upper and/or lower jaw.
